LASIK Long-Term Progression Staff Roundtable — What's it really like now, more than 10 years after surgery? —

At Nagoya Eye Clinic, many of the doctors and staff who work here have undergone LASIK.
This time, three of them, Director Kojima (20 years of experience), administrative staff (15 years of experience), and nurse (13 years of experience), talked about the reality of LASIK.

◆Why did you decide to have surgery?
Doctor:
"When I was a medical intern, my lifestyle was irregular and contact lenses were really tiring. My eyes were getting really dry, so I asked Dr. Nakamura, who was doing a lot of LASIK at the time, for help."
Administration:
"I have always had dry eyes, and my contact lenses would feel uncomfortable on a daily basis. I was only half-hearted about the surgery when I went in for the checkup, but when I found out I had a low endothelial cell count, I realized that there was no future for me in continuing to wear contact lenses, so I made the decision."
nurse:
"When I was working overseas, I used contact lenses that weren't one-day lenses, and I often got conjunctivitis. I also had to work night shifts, so I couldn't wear them for long periods of time. I decided to take the test because I wanted to work without glasses."

◆How have things changed since the surgery?
Doctor:
"You can travel and play sports without worrying about contact. This is really big."
Administration:
"I can see from the moment I wake up! My vision is clear even in the middle of the night! Not having to go through the hassle of "taking it off, washing it, and going to sleep" has made my life so much easier."
nurse:
"My luggage has been reduced. Contact lens supplies take up a surprising amount of space (laughs). Also, I was amazed at how clearly I could see the stars in the night sky after the surgery."

◆ How does it look now, more than 10 years later?
Doctor:
"Now that I'm over 40, my nearsightedness has returned a little, so I only use glasses when driving at night.
My right eye is far-sighted and my left eye is slightly near-sighted, so I have "micro monovision." I can see both near and far without glasses, which is very comfortable."
Administration:
"Now that I'm in my 40s, I've started to have trouble seeing things far away. I think I'm starting to get presbyopia when it comes to things close up, but it doesn't cause any problems in my daily life."
nurse:
"My vision in the distance is a little blurry now, but not so much that I need glasses.
However, when I look at the mountains and scenery, I sometimes think, 'I wish it was a little clearer.'"

◆ What the three have in common
● The “comfort of the naked eye” after surgery remains unchanged and there is still a high level of satisfaction
● Age-related changes occur, but these are natural and occur in everyone, regardless of whether they have had LASIK or not.
● Because I have surgical experience, I can explain things to patients in my own words.

◆ Lastly, a word
The unanimous answer:
"I'm so glad I had LASIK!"
Free yourself from the discomfort of contact lenses and the hassle of glasses.
Ten, fifteen, even twenty years later, I still feel the comfort of going without glasses.
Nagoya Eye Clinic employs staff with actual surgical experience.
