[Dr. Sawaki] ESCRS Diary

I attended the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) held in Barcelona, Spain to give a presentation at the conference. I usually work at a general hospital and train doctors in their first and second year of ophthalmology. For that reason, I conducted research on new cataract surgery machines and the surgical efficiency of young doctors, which led to my presentation at the conference.
I have never imagined that I, a person who has always struggled with English since my student days, would be making a presentation abroad. I used the AI translation that I also use in my medical practice to help me prepare my slides, and I listened to the NHK radio course on an app to restudy my English. Perhaps because of that, I was able to spend five days far more fulfilling than I had initially feared.
Before returning home, I took a trip to Barcelona and visited the tourist attractions until I was completely exhausted. I was impressed to be able to see in person the historical buildings that I had only seen in books and on TV.
This was my first time at ERCRS and my first time in Spain, and I realized that there is a stimulation that can only be obtained by attending a conference and sightseeing in person. I would like to work hard at my medical practice, research, and English studies, with the goal of participating again.
