Prevent progression of glaucoma

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects 40 in 20 people over the age of 1.It is a disease in which the number of retinal ganglion cells in the eye decreases, gradually narrowing the visual field, and eventually causing loss of visual acuity and even blindness. When these cells are damaged, part of the associated visual field is lost and progressively progresses.Cells that have been damaged once cannot be revived. Therefore,Vision that has become narrowed due to glaucoma cannot be restored.

1 or more: Even if you don't feel any abnormality in your eyes, we recommend that you get tested once.
Other known risk factors for glaucoma include diabetes, migraines, and sleep apnea. The combination of these factors increases the risk of glaucoma.

We recommend that you check it on a large screen, such as a computer, rather than a smartphone.

All current glaucoma treatments aim to prevent further vision loss by lowering intraocular pressure.Finding glaucoma in its early stages and starting treatment increases the chances of preserving vision for life.
Drug treatment
Medication is the first option for slowing the progression of glaucoma.Eye drops are administered once or twice a day to lower intraocular pressure.
Normally, eye drops lower the intraocular pressure, but if the eye drops are not used, the intraocular pressure will return to its original value. It is important to use eye drops every day, just like blood pressure medicine.
If the intraocular pressure does not decrease to the target, the type of eye drops may be increased or changed. For such people, more regular eye drops are important. If you are using multiple eye drops, follow the instructions, such as leaving an interval of at least XNUMX minutes.

If eye drops do not lower the intraocular pressure to the target level or visual field impairment progresses, consider laser treatment or surgical therapy.Follow your doctor's instructions to apply the eye drops correctly.
Once started, eye drops that lower intraocular pressure are often taken for the rest of your life. However, according to a survey conducted so far on the compliance status of eye drops in glaucoma patients, it is known that about 3% do not use eye drops as prescribed.

SLT laser treatment for those who find it difficult to use eye drops every day
A simple laser treatment (SLT [selective laser trabeculoplasty]) can lower the intraocular pressure. It has been reported that early treatment is effective both economically and therapeutically. This laser treatment is effective in 70% of patients, and the effect lasts for 1 to 1 years with one laser. You can reduce the number of eye drops that you use every day, and in some cases, you may be able to manage your symptoms without using them.

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery iStent injectW
Cataract surgery using (Istent Inject W)
Simultaneously with cataract surgery, a maximum of two 0.3mm titanium instruments called iStent injectW are inserted into the tissues of the eye through a small incision to restore stagnant aqueous humor flow and reduce intraocular pressure. make it normal. In addition to cataract surgery, the surgery is completed in about 2 to 5 minutes.Eye Stent Inject W is already performed in many countries around the world. In Japan, it is approved as a device that can perform minimally invasive glaucoma surgery at the same time as cataract surgery in patients with early to intermediate glaucoma who develop cataracts while taking glaucoma drugs. (It is not possible to perform surgery with only Eye Stent Inject W).

By performing this surgery, the number of glaucoma eye drops that have been used may be reduced, making it easier for patients to use eye drops, and it is expected that this will slow down the progression of glaucoma. There have already been many cases reported in Japan and abroad where eye drops have been discontinued after this surgery.
*Although the iStent injectW is made of metal (titanium), you can safely undergo MRI examinations (magnetic resonance imaging) in the future.
*If you have any questions about this surgery, please feel free to contact your doctor.
About iStent injectW

A titanium implant smaller than a sesame seed.Various implants are used in medicine, but iStent injectW is the smallest among implants.By inserting it into the part of the eye where there is resistance to the flow of water (aqueous humor), called the trabecular meshwork, the aqueous humor will flow smoothly.
