What are floaters?
Floaters are a visual symptom experienced by many people as they age. When you are in a bright place or look at the blue sky, you may see floating objects like insects or lint in your field of vision. When you move your eyes, the floaters move with you. The shape, number, and size of the floaters you see may vary from person to person, and they will not disappear even if you blink or rub your eyes. You may also see them on some days and not on others. This symptom is often considered harmless, but it can cause visual discomfort for patients and interfere with daily life. At Nagoya Eye Clinic's "Floaters Outpatient Clinic," we will listen to the concerns and worries of our patients and provide the best treatment.

Causes of floaters
The most common causes of floaters are age-related vitreous degeneration and posterior vitreous detachment. These changes usually occur as part of the natural aging process, and in many cases, observation is the only option. However, they can also be a sign of serious illnesses such as retinal detachment. Even if there is nothing wrong with your retina, if you are experiencing discomfort or stress in your daily life, we recommend that you see a doctor rather than self-diagnosing.

Self-check
0: no problem
If there are two or more, you may have floaters. If left untreated, this can lead to illnesses such as retinal detachment, so we recommend that you see a doctor.
Treatment for floaters
Traditionally, the treatment for floaters has been "vitrectomy." Vitreous surgery is effective in clearing vision by removing the cloudy vitreous, but it is a treatment that comes with risks (such as infection and retinal detachment) and is physically demanding. For this reason, it has been used with careful consideration and mainly in cases where symptoms are extremely severe.
New Treatment Options
Minimally invasive YAG laser treatment
Recent technological innovations have led to the development of "YAG laser treatment," which is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. This treatment uses a laser to break up the opacified areas that cause localized floaters, reducing symptoms. Compared to vitreous surgery, this procedure places less of a physical burden on the patient and can be completed in a short time (approximately 15 to 30 minutes) on an outpatient basis. In addition, postoperative recovery is quick, minimizing the impact on the patient's daily life.
